What are dental implants?
Dental implants are artificial tooth replacements. The crowns or other prosthetic tooth replacement option attached to the implants are typically made from tooth-colored porcelain or ceramic.
A small titanium post is used to replace the root of your missing tooth. Unlike other forms of tooth restoration that rely on clasps or surrounding teeth for support, dental implants are surgically placed in the jawbone.
Dental implants are designed to provide the same strength, structure, and appearance of your natural teeth, and they don’t become loose like dentures or bridges, allowing for easy eating and speaking.
Who needs dental implants?
Dental implants are used in conjunction with a variety of applications to help patients restore missing teeth like crowns, bridges, and dentures. Dental implants can help address several structural and cosmetic concerns, which include:
- Chipped or cracked teeth
- Extracted teeth
- Severe tooth decay
- Weakened teeth
If you have missing or damaged teeth, the team at New Century Smile works with you to develop the right treatment for your condition. To determine if you’re a good candidate for dental implants, the team has to evaluate your tooth and bone structure. Depending on the amount of jawbone you have near your missing tooth, additional procedures like a bone graft may be needed.
What should I expect from the dental implant procedure?
Dental implants require several procedures for successful placement. Like all forms of tooth restoration, the dental implant process begins with the extraction of your damaged tooth. After your gums have healed, the first step is the placement of your artificial tooth root. Your dentist places a titanium post into the bone socket of your missing tooth. After each stage of the dental implant process, your bone and gums are given time to heal.
After the metal post successfully fuses with your jawbone (typically after six to 12 weeks), the team will place a connector (abutment) on top. In some cases, the titanium post and abutment can be placed during the same procedure.
Once the abutment is secure and your gums have healed, the team will make impressions of your teeth to develop your custom tooth replacement. The final stage is the placement of the crown. The crown is attached to the abutment for a reliable and secure hold.
